Research Resources

Impact Teen Drivers believes in using current, relevant, and valid research to create and support our effective educational materials. Below are outstanding organizations that provide research resources.

Insurance Institute of Highway Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses — deaths, injuries and property damage — from crashes on the nation's roads. IIHS research and statistics can easily be sorted by topic, such as cell phones, safety belts, and teenagers. The GDL calculator is a powerful tool showing how changes in graduated driver licensing laws can affect teen injuries and deaths on our roads.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was established by the Highway Safety Act of 1970 and is dedicated to achieving the highest standards of excellence in motor vehicle and highway safety. Extensive research provides the scientific strength needed to support motor vehicle and traffic safety goals. Analytical and statistical data are also available from NHTSA.

Centers for Disease Control

Centers for Disease Control’s main goal is to protect health and safety through the control and prevention of disease, injury, and disability. One of the targets of CDC research and prevention efforts are motor vehicle crashes, a serious public health problem. The CDC believes this is a winnable battle. WISQARS is an interactive database system that provides customized reports of injury-related data. The motor vehicle safety page includes specific links to distracted driving, teen drivers, and costs and prevention policies.

National Safety Council

The National Safety Council is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to save lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes and communities and on the road. Research and statistics have been a focus for NSC since day one. Publishers of Injury Facts® and the Journal of Safety Research, NSC has many resources on their website including their Research & Statistical Services and dedicated educational sections for distracted driving as well as teen driving.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute is working to reduce the frequency and severity of teens' motor vehicle crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Teen Driver Safety Research team employs comprehensive, rigorous methods to both analyze factors associated with teen crashes and to develop interventions to change behaviors that contribute to these crashes. Information for researchers and others seeking reliable facts and statistics can visit the researcher page or navigate to other pages for parents, teens, policymakers, and educators.
